IC INFORMATION
Characters Name: Rinoa Heartilly
Age: 17
Canon: Final Fantasy VIII
Canon Point: Disk 4, after Ultimecia is defeated but pre-ending
Species: Human... mostly
Gender: Female
Orientation: Heterosexual. Romance plays a pretty big part in her canon storyline. During canon events she's expressed interest in exactly two guys - the first being Seifer and the second Squall. So while one could probably argue it another way, I think she'll be more comfortable with a male spouse. (Though odds are if it's someone not named Squall she'll be disappointed no matter what happens anyway.)

History: Link!

Appearance:
Rinoa wears her straight, black hair long and it's decorated with three caramel streaks on either side of her face. Her eyes are dark brown color. Of an average height, Rinoa's also fairly slender with only subtle curves (a polite way to say she's not all that endowed in the chest area for a video game character).

A sleeveless duster is probably Rinoa's signature item. Made of a sky blue knit fabric, it even comes with matching arm warmers! On the back of her duster there's a stylized pair of wings that serve as her symbol. While an interesting style icon and made of a knit it's not the warmest piece of clothing nor is it particularly practical. Oh well, at least it's cute! Under the duster she wears a simple black spaghetti strap cami with a deep-v neckline. This is paired with a short denim skirt which she wears over a pair of zippered biker shorts. (I know, it's kind of 80s looking, but she makes it work). Finishing this look off she wears a black ribbon tied around her upper left arm and oddly enough a pair of rather chunky ankle boots.

Another signature piece is the necklace she is never seen without. It's a plain silver link necklace that holds two rings that are very important to her. The first is a plain silver band that belonged to her mother. The second is of a stylized winged lion named Griever and this ring technically belongs to Squall. She's currently borrowing it from him and she should probably give it back one day, but that's not likely to happen anytime soon.

Personality:
At first glance Rinoa seems like a friendly and outgoing teenager who's a bit of a flirt. Born into a wealthy family, she's grown up in a world of luxury that's left her somewhat naive about the workings of the world. At this same time thanks to how safe this sheltered life was, it's also helped her be very outspoken. Rinoa isn't the sort of person who believes in holding a lot back. In fact, sometimes she's a little too open about her opinions, which can land her in trouble sometimes. Squall certainly doesn't see to appreciate most of her comments about his attitude and behavior that's for sure! Despite this, she actually means well and seems to follow the belief that kindness and friendship are stronger than violence. Who else would think giving the evil sorceress a piece of jewelry that would bind her magic is a better idea than just killing her?

Which brings up the next point nicely, Rinoa isn't very adept at planning things out. She's great at having ideas, but her execution of them often leaves a lot to be desired. Part of this is because she's just too inexperienced to fully realize just what sort of mess she's getting herself into. The rest is mostly just because she's just too darn rash and/or stubborn to fully plan things out before charging into things. Squall criticizes her for this early on in the game and she doesn't take well to what he says. In fact, she actually runs away for a while, simply because she doesn't want to hear what he has to say. It's yet another one of the ways that highlights just how different she is from the trained mercenaries she's traveling with.

That's an important thing to remember about her character right there. In a group of fully trained mercenaries, Rinoa is the odd one out. She's no mercenary and for most of the game she's basically just a normal teenage girl caught in events that are well out of her league. Like a normal teenager, her actions can often be some combination of ill-advised, rash, or just downright stupid. Sometimes this ends in disaster and there are several times where Squall has had to come to her rescue as whatever bright idea Rinoa's launched herself on ends in total disaster. See: the fallout from when she tried to give Edea that bangle. Sometimes though, Rinoa has the right idea of it. Where Irvine would have been content leaving everyone else stuck in prison, Rinoa made him go back for everyone else as well. It's a good thing too, because as it is everyone barely escapes alive.

Thankfully all is well that ends well, as losing people is one of the things that Rinoa fears the most. Her mother died when she was barely five years old and it's not long after that her father changes from loving caregiver to more of a distant stranger. Ever since then she's been afraid of being alone and also the dark. Which makes sense in that the dark is awfully isolating. It's only natural that it would bother her since the darkness would emphasis whatever loneliness Rinoa's feeling. The important thing is that she doesn't let these fears define her and instead does everything she can to keep the people she cares about close. Squall has a similar fear, but instead he copes with it by pushing everyone away instead. It's interesting just how opposite of each other they can be without even really trying.

It's never explicitly stated in canon just what causes Rinoa to join the Forest Owls or just what catalyst makes her decide to take on her mother's maiden name. It's obvious that Rinoa does truly care about Timber and that she really does want make the city free from Galbadia's grasp. However how much of this desire originated from her wishing to rebel against her father is unclear. Since he's a rather important man in Galbadia's military brass, the fact that Rinoa's fighting to free Timber from Galbadia control can only be seen as an act of rebellion, no matter what intentions she might have.

Whatever her initial reasons, it pretty much falls to the wayside entirely as bigger problems start to pile up all around them. The war against the sorceress isn't something anyone could have seen coming. Soon Rinoa's goal of helping free Timber is lost in the chaos as everyone starts on a desperate journey to save the entire world from a power mad sorceress from the future. It's fairly telling that Rinoa continues to stick with everyone even after her original goals are pushed to the side. She might not have their training our their abilities, but Rinoa isn't the sort of girl who gives up just because things get tough. Sure, it's not easy since she's not a trained fighter like the others in the group, but she still carried on despite this handicap. A feat made all the more impressive since she's honestly scared and deep down isn't ready to face anything on this large of a scale. Despite the odds, she never gave up and chose to do her best to stay by everyone.

This stubborn insistence is a big step up for Rinoa. Early in the game she would freeze up or even run when things got tough, but by the end of the game she's resolved to stand up with everyone else no matter what the cost. What a cost it is too! Becoming a sorceress isn't something she sought out, it's more thrust upon her by a series of circumstances that gave her very little choice in the matter. Becoming a sorceress is a scary thing in her world, since sorceresses don't exactly have the best track record over the course of their long history.

Being possessed by the very evil sorceress they are fighting takes turns Rinoa's world on it's ear. These new powers made her a danger to everyone on the planet. Add to this a powerful evil that can seemingly control her at will and Rinoa is left with some tough decisions. Ultimately her fear of hurting the people she cares about is more important than her aversion to being alone and Rinoa accepts a fate that would leave her completely cut off from the world in a state of "living death". Being sealed away would mean that she's isolated from everything and unable to even move. Still she accepts this fate despite how much she fears it just to protect everyone else.

Squall's rescue forces her to face the fact that she's running away from her fears instead of facing them. It's thanks to this that she resolves to see the fight through to the finish, vowing to do what she could to stop the sorceress from the future. This is a brave step towards a new world for Rinoa, showing just how much she's grown from the sheltered girl she'd been at the start of their journey.

Abilities:
Rinoa isn't a SeeD and so she doesn't have the combat training of one. Don't count her out in a fight just because of that, because she's got a few tricks hidden away that might not be so obvious. Once in party she shows an aptitude for magic, though it turns out it's not her only good stat. Her strength stat is a full 20 points higher than anyone else in the party - that includes Squall and Zell!

Rinoa's weapon of choice is a uniquely designed weapon called a blaster edge. A Blaster Edge is a bladed projectile weapon that operates kind of like a crossbow mixed with a boomerang. While it's never shown in game, odds are she's terrible at hand to hand combat or using a different sort of weapon since she doesn't have the training. The reason she uses a blaster edge is likely because it's a rather simple weapon to use that's also ranged so she doesn't have to get directly into harm's way.

Rinoa is unique in that she has two limit breaks that can be used depending on her canon point. Her first is called Combine and involves her working with her dog, Angelo. The second is called Angel Wing and is obtained once she becomes a sorceress.

Combine is a series of different commands where Rinoa and Angelo work together on the battle field. Some of them are offensive and deal damage, others are defensive and help other party members, and there are still others where Angelo just shows up to dig around and find buried treasure. Whimsical I know, but it's true! I've not gone into too much detail on combine, because as far as I know Angelo will not be joining Rinoa in game at this point in time. If required I'd be more than happy to write something a little more descriptive out should Angelo ever be re-gained in game.

Despite what her strength stat might say, she's pretty average when it comes to physical activities. The trait that makes her more than a normal human is her magical ability. Her base magic stat, like her strength stat, is higher than the SeeDs she travels with, but even that's not what sets her apart. As a sorceress Rinoa doesn't require a Guardian Force or para-magic as sorceresses use actual magic magic. In game this is kept from being overpowering by requiring her to use her limit break - Angel Wing to access her powers as a sorceress. Angel Wing puts Rinoa into an almost trance-like state and she'll continue to cast offensive magic at the enemy until she's dead, the enemy is dead, or she's been petrified.

Other than that, she's pretty much like any other teenage girl who grew up in a well off home. She's proven in canon that she's terrible at handicrafts and from the looks of the manor she grew up in cleaning, cooking, and chores like that probably weren't part of her childhood education terribly much.

Third Person:

He was late. Rinoa sighed and leaned back so she could better watch the puffy clouds that were gliding by over head. How typical! When she's late he never let her live it down, but apparently it was okay if he was late. A fond smile tugged at Rinoa's lips as she realized just how petty she was being. It's quite a bit different to be mad at someone who was consistently late and another to be mad at someone who was almost always late. It wasn't his fault that the one time she managed to show up early ended up being the one time he was late.

Swinging her feet out idly, she continued to watch the clouds as she attempted to wait patiently for him to arrive. After all it was only five minutes passed the time they were supposed meet up! However the seconds passed by like minutes and the minutes felt more like hours and it wasn't long before Rinoa just couldn't handle sitting idly anymore.

"That's it! Maybe if I'm lucky I can catch him on his way here. Then I can be the one grumbling about lateness for a change!"

Standing up, she does a silly little victory dance in celebration. After all, going out and finding him was way better than just sitting around being bored. If she'd spent more time thinking things over, she might have realized just how bad of an idea this was. Sadly, that just wasn't Rinoa's way. Once her mind was set, it was set and unfortunately for everyone involved it was set on this obviously hair brained scheme.

Of course intentions were great, but the world around her was still new enough that it wasn't hard for Rinoa to lose sight of her goals. So instead of doggedly searching for him, she instead ended up buying an ice cream at the local convenience store, listening to a street musician, and then stopping to admire the flowers at a local park. By the time she remembered just what she was supposed to be doing, it was now over half an hour passed their meeting time. Again! She'd done it again! This wasn't exactly the first time she'd tried to be early. In fact most of the times she was late for a meeting it could be traced back to her getting there too early and then wandering off.

After smiling at a butterfly as it flitted between brightly colored flowers, she turned and ran full speed back towards where she should have stayed all along. Odds were if she apologized cutely enough she'd only get scowled at and have to listen to a lecture about how irresponsible she was yet again. That wasn't such a big deal, she got those lectures all the time! What was one more?

"Sorry! I kind of last track of the time. It won't happen again I swear!"
